An Honest Market View

Most candidates have heard a recruiter tell them a role is a great opportunity before knowing much about their actual background. An honest market view means something more specific, and more useful, than that.

How do I know if a recruiter is actually being honest with me about the job market?

A genuine recruiter will give you a real, current picture of where you actually sit against the market, based on real, live data from what’s actually being hired for and what candidates with a similar profile are genuinely achieving right now, not a flattering number designed to keep you engaged in a conversation. That includes being told directly if the market for your specific background is quieter than you might expect, not just when it’s convenient to say so. At Reload, we call this an honest market view, and it’s one of the five things every candidate we represent can expect.

Why do some recruiters always sound encouraging, even when a role probably isn't right for me?

Because most recruiters are incentivised to keep every conversation moving forward, which naturally biases what gets said toward encouragement regardless of genuine fit. Being told a specific role, or the market generally, isn’t a strong fit right now is a harder conversation to have, but it’s a far more useful one than false encouragement that leads nowhere.

Will a good recruiter tell me things I might not want to hear about my job search?

Yes, and that’s actually the sign of a recruiter working in your interest rather than their own. If your current experience doesn’t line up well with what firms are hiring for right now, or your compensation expectations sit outside what’s realistic given the market, that’s worth knowing clearly and early, not discovering after weeks of a process that was never likely to succeed.

What kind of evidence should back up what a recruiter tells me about my market position?

Real, current data drawn from live searches, actual roles being worked right now, actual compensation ranges being offered, and genuine patterns in what’s getting candidates through a process successfully versus what isn’t. That’s different from a general market opinion, it’s grounded in what’s actually happening in live conversations with real hiring managers at this moment.

What should I actually expect from a recruiter who claims to give an honest market view?

A direct, current assessment of where you stand, including the parts that might be a harder truth to hear, delivered because it’s useful to you, not because it’s the easiest thing to say in the moment.
